Experiments with Nature

I am drawn to the most basic ingredients of the photographic process: sunlight, light sensitive paper/film, and experiments with environmentally sustainable chemistry. I make photo chemistry from waste materials such as mint tea and coffee grounds. The images in this series are derived from the unpredictable combination of these variables combined with organic material picked from my garden. Together, the outcomes are wonderfully surprising and beautifully imperfect.

As an fine art photographer, I work with slow photographic processes that create moments of pause, mindfulness, and reflection. I embrace the unpredictable nature of this process–what I expected or hoped for often differs from the results—and this sense of discovery and uncertainty is an important part of the work. It requires a willingness to embrace whatever the outcome and see the potential in the results. The work in this series represent this going sense of discovery, experimentation and exploration.
